Who Marries First?কে আগে বিয়ে করবে?
On Mount Kailash, in the divine household of Shiva and Parvati, a problem arose that every family can understand: both sons wanted to get married, and both thought they should go first!
Kartikeya, the handsome warrior, said: "I am the firstborn! I should naturally marry first." (In some versions of the story, Kartikeya is the elder, in others Ganesh is — the gods themselves seem to disagree on this!)
Ganesh, the wise elephant-headed brother, said: "Age is just a number, brother. What matters is who is more deserving."
Shiva and Parvati sighed — this argument had been going on for days. Finally, Shiva proposed the same challenge as before: "Race around the world. The one who returns first shall marry first."
কৈলাস পর্বতে, শিব ও পার্বতীর দেব পরিবারে এমন এক সমস্যা দেখা দিল যা প্রতিটি পরিবার বুঝতে পারে: দুই ছেলেই বিয়ে করতে চায়, আর দুজনেই মনে করে সে আগে করবে!
সুদর্শন যোদ্ধা কার্তিকেয় বললেন: "আমি প্রথমজাত! স্বাভাবিকভাবেই আমি আগে বিয়ে করব।" (গল্পের কোনো কোনো সংস্করণে কার্তিকেয় বড়, অন্যগুলিতে গণেশ — দেবতারা নিজেরাই এ নিয়ে একমত হতে পারেন না!)
জ্ঞানী গজমস্তক ভাই গণেশ বললেন: "বয়স তো শুধু সংখ্যা, ভাই। গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হলো কে বেশি যোগ্য।"
শিব ও পার্বতী দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেললেন — এই তর্ক কয়েকদিন ধরে চলছিল। অবশেষে শিব আগের মতোই চ্যালেঞ্জ দিলেন: "পৃথিবী প্রদক্ষিণ করে দৌড়াও। যে আগে ফিরবে সে আগে বিয়ে করবে।"
"আমি আগে!" "না, আমি আগে!" — শিব আর পার্বতী দুই ছেলের ঝগড়ায় ক্লান্ত হয়ে প্রতিযোগিতা দিলেন!
The Race Begins Againআবার দৌড় শুরু
Once again, Kartikeya shot off on his peacock like a streak of blue-green lightning. He had learned nothing from the mango incident — or perhaps he thought the same trick wouldn't work twice.
Ganesh watched his brother disappear into the horizon, then calmly turned to his parents. "The scriptures say that one's parents are the whole world," he said. And once again, he walked around Shiva and Parvati three times with loving devotion.
But this time there was a twist. Shiva, wanting to teach both sons a lesson, had invited the sages Vishwakarma's daughters, Siddhi (Success) and Buddhi (Intelligence), to be present. When Ganesh completed his circumambulation of his parents, Shiva declared him the winner — and his marriage to Siddhi and Buddhi was performed right there and then!
আবারও কার্তিকেয় নীল-সবুজ বিদ্যুতের মতো ময়ূরে চড়ে উড়ে গেলেন। আমের ঘটনা থেকে তিনি কিছু শেখেননি — অথবা হয়তো ভেবেছিলেন একই কৌশল দুবার কাজ করবে না।
গণেশ তাঁর ভাইকে দিগন্তে মিলিয়ে যেতে দেখলেন, তারপর শান্তভাবে বাবা-মায়ের দিকে ফিরলেন। "শাস্ত্র বলে পিতা-মাতাই সমগ্র পৃথিবী," তিনি বললেন। আর আবারও তিনি ভালোবাসার ভক্তিতে শিব ও পার্বতীকে তিনবার প্রদক্ষিণ করলেন।
কিন্তু এবার একটি মোড় ছিল। শিব, দুই ছেলেকেই শিক্ষা দিতে চেয়ে, বিশ্বকর্মার কন্যা সিদ্ধি (সাফল্য) ও বুদ্ধি (বুদ্ধিমত্তা) কে উপস্থিত থাকতে আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়েছিলেন। গণেশ যখন পিতা-মাতার প্রদক্ষিণ সম্পূর্ণ করলেন, শিব তাঁকে বিজয়ী ঘোষণা করলেন — এবং সিদ্ধি ও বুদ্ধির সাথে তাঁর বিবাহ সেখানেই সেই মুহূর্তে সম্পন্ন হলো!
গণেশ আবারও মা-বাবাকে প্রদক্ষিণ করলেন — এবং এবার পুরস্কার ছিল সিদ্ধি ও বুদ্ধির সাথে বিবাহ!
Kartikeya's Hurtকার্তিকেয়ের কষ্ট
When Kartikeya returned from his exhausting journey around the world, he found not only that Ganesh had won (again!) but that his brother was already married. He was furious and deeply hurt.
"This isn't fair!" he cried. "He didn't really go around the world! I did the actual work!"
In his anger, Kartikeya left Mount Kailash. He flew south to a mountain called Palani (in what is now Tamil Nadu in southern India) and declared that he would live there alone, away from his family. He shaved his head and gave up all his royal possessions.
When Parvati heard this, her heart broke. She rushed to see her son.
কার্তিকেয় যখন ক্লান্তিকর পৃথিবী প্রদক্ষিণ শেষে ফিরলেন, তিনি দেখলেন শুধু গণেশ (আবারও!) জিতেননি, বরং তাঁর ভাই ইতিমধ্যে বিয়ে করে ফেলেছেন। তিনি ক্রুদ্ধ ও গভীরভাবে আহত হলেন।
"এটা ন্যায্য নয়!" তিনি কাঁদলেন। "সে আসলে পৃথিবী ঘোরেনি! আমিই আসল কাজটা করেছি!"
রাগে কার্তিকেয় কৈলাস পর্বত ছেড়ে দিলেন। তিনি দক্ষিণে পলনি নামে এক পাহাড়ে উড়ে গেলেন (যা এখন দক্ষিণ ভারতের তামিলনাড়ুতে) এবং ঘোষণা করলেন তিনি পরিবার থেকে দূরে একা সেখানে থাকবেন। তিনি মাথা মুড়ালেন এবং সমস্ত রাজকীয় সম্পত্তি ত্যাগ করলেন।
পার্বতী এটা শুনে হৃদয় ভেঙে গেল। তিনি ছেলেকে দেখতে ছুটে গেলেন।
কার্তিকেয় রাগ করে কৈলাস ছেড়ে দক্ষিণে চলে গেলেন — "এটা ন্যায্য নয়!" তিনি বললেন।
Love Heals Everythingভালোবাসা সব সারিয়ে তোলে
Parvati found Kartikeya on his lonely mountain. "My son," she said gently, "your anger is understandable. You feel it was unfair. But think about it — Ganesh's wisdom and your strength are both needed in this world. He won with cleverness; you would win in any test of courage or battle. You are both special in different ways."
Kartikeya looked at his mother and felt his anger melting. She was right. Ganesh was wise, and he was brave — they were different, not better or worse.
In time, the brothers reconciled. Today, during Durga Puja, you can see them standing side by side with their mother — Ganesh on her right and Kartikeya on her left. They are different in every way: Ganesh round and gentle, Kartikeya tall and fierce. But they stand together as a family.
This story reminds us that siblings will always compete — and that's okay! Brothers and sisters push each other to be better. What matters is that when the competition ends, love remains. Your brother or sister may be completely different from you — but that difference makes your family stronger, not weaker.
পার্বতী তাঁর নির্জন পাহাড়ে কার্তিকেয়কে খুঁজে পেলেন। "বাবা," তিনি আস্তে বললেন, "তোমার রাগ বোধগম্য। তোমার মনে হচ্ছে এটা অন্যায় ছিল। কিন্তু ভেবে দেখো — গণেশের প্রজ্ঞা আর তোমার শক্তি দুটোই এই পৃথিবীতে দরকার। সে চতুরতায় জিতেছে; সাহস বা যুদ্ধের যেকোনো পরীক্ষায় তুমি জিতবে। তোমরা দুজনেই ভিন্নভাবে বিশেষ।"
কার্তিকেয় মায়ের দিকে তাকালেন এবং অনুভব করলেন রাগ গলে যাচ্ছে। তিনি ঠিকই বলেছেন। গণেশ জ্ঞানী, আর তিনি সাহসী — তাঁরা আলাদা, ভালো বা খারাপ নন।
সময়ের সাথে ভাইয়েরা মিটমাট করলেন। আজ দুর্গাপূজায় তাঁদের মায়ের দুপাশে পাশাপাশি দাঁড়িয়ে থাকতে দেখা যায় — গণেশ ডানে আর কার্তিকেয় বামে। তাঁরা সবদিক থেকে আলাদা: গণেশ গোলগাল ও কোমল, কার্তিকেয় লম্বা ও তেজস্বী। কিন্তু তাঁরা পরিবার হিসেবে একসাথে দাঁড়ান।
এই গল্প আমাদের মনে করিয়ে দেয় যে ভাই-বোনে প্রতিযোগিতা সবসময় হবে — এবং তাতে কিছু যায় আসে না! ভাই-বোন একে অপরকে আরও ভালো হতে ঠেলে দেয়। গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হলো প্রতিযোগিতা শেষ হলে ভালোবাসা থেকে যায়। তোমার ভাই বা বোন তোমার থেকে সম্পূর্ণ আলাদা হতে পারে — কিন্তু সেই পার্থক্যই তোমার পরিবারকে দুর্বল নয়, শক্তিশালী করে।
দুর্গাপূজায় মায়ের দুপাশে গণেশ ও কার্তিকেয় — ভিন্ন, কিন্তু একসাথে। পরিবারের ভালোবাসা সবকিছুর ঊর্ধ্বে!
The Lessonশিক্ষা
Siblings may compete, but love holds the family together. Wisdom and strength both have their place.
ভাই-বোনে প্রতিযোগিতা হতে পারে, কিন্তু ভালোবাসাই পরিবারকে একত্রে রাখে। প্রজ্ঞা ও শক্তি দুটোরই মূল্য আছে।
